What are things we get from plants?
We rely on plants for a surprising number of
things! Here are some of the important things we get from plants:
- Food: This is the most obvious one. We get
fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds directly from plants. These
provide us with essential nutrients, vitamins, and fiber for a healthy
diet.
- Oxygen: Plants carry out photosynthesis, a
process that takes in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. This oxygen is
what we breathe!
- Materials: We get many building
materials from plants, such as lumber for furniture and construction, and
fibers for making rope, cloth, and paper. Cotton, linen, and hemp are all
examples of natural fibers from plants.
- Medicine: Many medicines are derived from plants,
or contain ingredients originally extracted from plants. Aspirin, for
example, is derived from willow bark.
- Biofuels: Fuels like ethanol can be made from
plants, which is a more renewable resource than fossil fuels.
- Other products: We get a wide variety
of other products from plants, including rubber, dyes, cosmetics, and
essential oils.
Plants are truly amazing organisms that provide us with so many things
we need to survive and thrive.
